The category of Computer-Mediated Communication (
CMC) systems encompasses any computer-based system for communication between humans, including non-interactive systems (email, Usenet, weblogs, etc.) and real-time interactive systems, whether text-based (Unix "talk", lily,
IRC, ICQ, AIM, etc.) or multimedia (voice chat, video conferencing, etc.). The
RPI-ACM extended community has a long history of creating new real-time interactive
CMC systems (see
LilyGenealogy).
